give it up for dennis prager, ladies

The twice divorced Dennis Prager has some advice for the ladies: Put out or get out.

The subject is one of the most common problems that besets marriages: the wife who is not in the mood and the consequently frustrated and hurt husband.

There are marriages with the opposite problem — a wife who is frustrated and hurt because her husband is rarely in the mood. But, as important and as destructive as that problem is, it has different causes and different solutions, and is therefore not addressed here. What is addressed is the far more common problem of He wants, she doesnt want.

It is an axiom of contemporary marital life that if a wife is not in the mood, she need not have sex with her husband. Here are some arguments why a woman who loves her husband might want to rethink this axiom.

First, women need to recognize how a man understands a wifes refusal to have sex with him: A husband knows that his wife loves him first and foremost by her willingness to give her body to him. This is rarely the case for women. Few women know their husband loves them because he gives her his body (the idea sounds almost funny). This is, therefore, usually a revelation to a woman. Many women think mens natures are similar to theirs, and this is so different from a womans nature, that few women know this about men unless told about it.

The best part? This is only Part I:

In Part II, I will explain in detail why mood should play little or no role in a womans determining whether she has sex with her husband.

Some advice for Prager: Go for the hat trick, and in Part III explain in detail why ‘marital rape’ is an oxymoron.

Exhibit A: What racial Divide?

Racial divide? Didn’t this election prove that our racial divide had moved to the past? Barack Obama didn’t win from the black vote — he won a majority of white voters as well. While racism will never get completely stamped out, it has thankfully faded out of our public life. That was a prerequisite to victory, not a result of it. Had there actually been a racial divide in our public life, Barack Obama wouldn’t have won the nomination, let alone the election. Maybe Time should think about that.

Exhibit B: Ah, here’s what they mean by ‘no racial divide’: Call in Colonel Kurtz’s extermination program:

Facing an influx of refugees, the residents of Algiers Point could have pulled together food, water and medical supplies for the flood victims. Instead, a group of white residents, convinced that crime would arrive with the human exodus, sought to seal off the area, blocking the roads in and out of the neighborhood by dragging lumber and downed trees into the streets. They stockpiled handguns, assault rifles, shotguns and at least one Uzi and began patrolling the streets in pickup trucks and SUVs. The newly formed militia, a loose band of about fifteen to thirty residents, most of them men, all of them white, was looking for thieves, outlaws or, as one member put it, anyone who simply “didn’t belong.”


… Some of the gunmen prowling Algiers Point were out to wage a race war, says one woman whose uncle and two cousins joined the cause. A former New Orleanian, this source spoke to me anonymously because she fears her relatives could be prosecuted for their crimes. “My uncle was very excited that it was a free-for-all–white against black–that he could participate in,” says the woman. “For him, the opportunity to hunt black people was a joy.”

“They didn’t want any of the ‘ghetto niggers’ coming over” from the east side of the river, she says, adding that her relatives viewed African-Americans who wandered into Algiers Point as “fair game.” One of her cousins, a young man in his 20s, sent an e-mail to her and several other family members describing his adventures with the militia. He had attached a photo in which he posed next to an African-American man who’d been fatally shot. The tone of the e-mail, she says, was “gleeful”–her cousin was happy that “they were shooting niggers.”

I wonder if bleeding within the lines is permitted. We know colouring outside them isn’t.

Why do they hate poetry?

It’s been remarked upon elsewhere,, but the wingnuts are scraping the barrel when they have to get outraged about the choice of poet Obama employs for the inauguration. As Hilzoy says, any poet can sound like an idiot is you take a few words out of context.

In any case, the furor introduced me to this poem; I’m glad it did.

Science, science, science!
Everything is beautiful

blown up beneath my glass.
Colors dazzle insect wings.

A drop of water swirls
like marble. Ordinary

crumbs become stalactites
set in perfect angles

of geometry I’d thought

There is unexpected sun today
in London, and the clouds that

like a rubber tree and stares back

animal trainer shouts my cues.

so the whole world could see
it was shriveled and hard,
geometric, deformed, unnatural.
